Reading posts like
this one (warning- transphobia) make me think about how examining one oppression (usually one that the theorist lives through), creating an ideology around it, and then
treating said oppression as if it was the most important one, tends to not work at all.
It just causes a distortion of the facts to fit one's own needs, and the creation of blog posts with titles as glorious as this-
http://redmegaera.wordpress.com/2009/09/29/why-being-queer-is-a-privilege/I'm sure the families of Matthew Shephard, Angie Zapata and countless others killed in hate crimes will be pleased to know this! o wait
I generally don't think it's possible, or wise, to announce that the oppression(s) suffered by oneself are worse that others that the speaker/theorist has little experience with, or perhaps little empathy about. I wonder how many white skinned women's rights campainers in 19th/20th century US of A were all "Who cares about those negro women, they're barely human anyway"? I have a sad feeling the answer is most of them.
Have some damn
empathy, people. But that would mean acknowledging that your theories might be wrong and people who aren't like you are hurt by things, wouldn't it? Clearly theory >> human life!
